Abstract

Abstract: Neuraminidase genes, RNA segment 6, from six N1 and five N2 influenza A strains have been sequenced from the 3′ end of the viral RNA using the dideoxy method. In the first 200 nucleotides, 20 single base changes occur within the N1 subtype and 26 among the strains of the N2 subtype. Major differences were found between the sequences of the two subtypes (N1 and N2) where only about 100 of the first 200 nucleotides are the same. However, there is a region at the N terminus of the predicted amino acid sequence which is conserved between the N1 and N2 strains. The first 12 amino acids are identical in 9 of the 11 strains, and in the remaining two strains only a single amino acid substitution occurs.
